Krasnodar, September 3 – Yug Times. Every now and then, Krasnodar turns into a Venice — then rafts and boats become the only means to get to some places. The depth of the water torrents in Muzykalny and Moskovsky residential neighbourhoods reach 150 cm. This depth is a merciless assessment of the City Hall’s work.
According to the city Department for Construction, the current sewerage system in the city’s central part has several dozens of years been used to empty the untreated faecal and rainwater effluents into the Kuban River.
Presently, the city of Krasnodar has only two treatment facilities — one at Tolbukhin Street, and the other one behind the village of Yelizavetinskaya. Their ultimate daily capacity is about 400,000 cubic metres, which is too little for the city which regularly gets drowned. Besides, what is available is far from perfection.
...Over a century ago, horses would drown in Yekaterinodar after heavy rains, said Vitali Bardadym, a connoisseur of the city’s history. A hundred years have passed, but nothing has changed — now cars continue to drown after downpours.
