Krasnodar, 6 December – Yug Times. The draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia took place on December 1, 2017, in Moscow’s State Kremlin Palace. On that day, all participants of the World Cup learnt of their first rivals, and the date and places of the matches. Russia has been drawn with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay into Group A.
Sochi will be hosting four games of the group stage of the tournament. The first match will take place on June 15, when Portugal headed by Cristiano Ronaldo will be playing with Spain. On June 18, Panama will make its World Cup debut in Sochi against Belgium. On June 23, Germany will face Sweden; and on June 26, Australia will meet Peru.
On June 30, Fisht Stadium in Sochi will host a 1/8 final, and on July 7 — a quarterfinal.
Sochi Mayor Anatoli Pakhomov was quoted as saying that the city was very much pleased to learn the results of the draw.
After the drawing, the Kuban regional authorities expressed their hope that during the World Cup the sports bases in Sochi, Krasnodar, Gelendzhik and Anapa will accommodate the world’s strongest national teams.
